River of Wonder: Stories of the Anacostia
Location: Neval Thomas Elementary School, Washington, D.C.
Project Timeline: November, 2025 - July, 2026
Dimensions: Approximately 100 sq. ft in total, measuring 20 ft long by 9 ft wide.
Medium: Traditional thick smalti glass tiles adhered to a durable aluminum panel.
Description: Transforming the central amphitheater floor into a vivid educational canvas, our role is to translate the hidden life of the Anacostia River ecosystem into a lasting public artwork. Drawing on Native American storytelling, the swirling spiral motif features local wildlife, like otters and sturgeon, that act as teachers. By placing this at the 500-year floodplain elevation, the project shifts the space's perception from potential danger to one of intense curiosity, wonder, and environmental stewardship.
